What Is Video Color Grading?
Audiences watching films are enticed by movie magic. A dragon burning down a city, or a spaceship zooming through the galaxy, these cool effects leaves spectators flabbergasted. But, 'movie magic' isn't really magic (say WHAT?). It's hard work by professionals in the film industry that make scenes projected on the big screen so polished. One aspect often overlooked by moviegoers that brings about the 'movie magic' is color grading.
What is color grading? Color grading is what affects the tone and mood of a picture, affecting the overall interpretation of a scene. It's an adjustment made after the raw footage has been shot, part of the editing process. Color grading tweaks the color of an image, by adjusting the exposure, white balance, ISO, contrast, etc...Many films have a color scheme to add to the overall theme of the motion picture.
Color is a fundamental element in design and visual storytelling. It can brand your work as a photographer, filmmaker, or brand. Before you begin piecing together your scenes in post, you must ensure that the scenes emulate the correct feeling you wish to convey via the lighting and coloring.
The importance of color grading
Video editors have a lot of power over the final product of a film. Adjusting color can manipulate the audiences take on what they've just seen. A color grader makes the image fit the feel of a story, thus making their job pretty darn important. Color grading is done before editing, and often influences the direction of the editing process. It is also the only step where you can focus solely on the visual. What does the singular frame convey? How does it make you feel? How can you tweak it to make you feel differently or fit the storyline better?
